Christian Rohlff, PhD
CEO / founder
Dr. Rohlff received his Ph.D. from the Department of Pharmacology at Georgetown
University in 1994. After two appointments at the National Cancer Institute he
joined Oxford GlycoSciences and was appointed Director of Proteome Research
Collaborations in 2001. As manager of the Proteomics Division's commercial
collaborations he gained expertise in the implementation of clinical proteomics
programmes to identify novel therapeutic protein targets and protein biomarkers
with many pharmaceutical companies and academic partners, including Pfizer, GSK,
Bayer, Wyeth, Takeda, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Oxford University and the
FDA. These studies have investigated many disease areas including Alzheimer's
disease, arteriosclerosis, dermal ulcers, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease, various metabolic, inflammatory and neuropsychiatric disorders,
toxicology, and oncology. Dr Rohlff co-authored over 20 protein patents
originating from these studies. Dr. Rohlff is the founder of Oxford Genome Sciences.
Dr. Rohlff is also a founding member on the board of the South East Health
Technologies Alliance (SEHTA), whose mission it is to catalyse innovation and
international competitiveness in south east England's health technologies sector.
Mike Gresser
CSO Elect
Mike Gresser received his Ph.D in Biochemistry in 1976 from Brandeis University, where his thesis research was done under the
supervision of W.P. Jencks on the mechanism of ester aminolysis. He did postdoctoral studies at the Molecular Biology Institute
at UCLA on the mitochondrial and chloroplast proton translocating ATP synthases, under the supervision of Paul D. Boyer.
In 1980 Mike joined the Department of Chemistry at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, and progressed through
the ranks of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor of Chemistry. While there Mike received the Excellence in
Teaching Award, and did research on the biochemistry of Vanadium V, and on the mitochondrial ATPase. In 1988 Mike Joined the
Merck Frosst Center for Therapeutic Research in Kirkland, Quebec as Director of Biochemistry. Over the next twelve years Mike
progressed through the ranks of Senior Director, then Executive Director of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Mike’s team
worked on a variety of small molecule drug discovery programs, resulting in the introduction of numerous molecules into clinical
trials. Two of these molecules, Singulair and Vioxx, became products. In 2000 Mike joined Amgen Inc. in Thousand Oaks, California,
as Vice President of Research for Inflammation, where he remained until April, 2006. For two years Mike served as Head of Neuroscience
Research as well as Inflammation Research. Mike’s team at Amgen worked on taking many molecular targets, introducing numerous small
molecules, human antibodies and other proteins into development. Currently Mike is a Visiting Scholar at the Molecular
Biology Institute at UCLA, and works as a consultant with Clarity Therapeutics Consulting.
Alasdair Stamps, PhD
Head of Target Discovery
Dr Stamps joined the company in 2006, bringing 11 years' experience of commercial target discovery
gained in biotechnology and pharma. He moved to OGeS from UCB-Celltech where he was responsible for
the identification and evaluation of therapeutic antibody licencing opportunities in oncology. He
was at Oxford GlycoSciences from 1998, where he was Head of Target Informatics, a group that designed
and built a target discovery platform to interrogate the world's largest proteomic dataset.
Previously, Dr Stamps worked at Yamanouchi, using genomic technologies to discover novel targets for
anti-inflammatory drug discovery. A biochemistry graduate, he gained his PhD in molecular biology at
the Beatson Institute in Glasgow, and held postdoctoral fellowships at the Royal Free Hospital and
the Institute of Cancer Research, Royal Marsden Hospital, London. He is a co-founder of BioPartner.co.uk Ltd,
a commercial partnering company that supports UK Trade & Investment and the bioscience industry.
Martin Barnes, D.Phil
Head of Bioinformatics
Prior to joining Oxford Genome Sciences in September 2004, Dr Barnes spent 9 years working as an IT consultant for
a software services company
specialising in providing IT services to the science and engineering industries. This role included systems
analysis and implementation, application development, database administration, project management and line
management. Martin has been involved in all areas of the IT project lifecycle - from initial requirements,
analysis and feasibility studies through to roll-out and subsequent support.
Martin has also been involved in IT process improvement and has written and presented training courses.
This work included five and a half years in the pharmaceutical industry, three and a half years of which were
at Oxford GlycoSciences as a consultant for up to 40 other IT staff.
David Bell, PhD
Head of Mass Spec Operations
Since gaining his PhD, Dr Bell has developed and applied mass spectrometric methods to drug discovery and development
processes. He has experience of a wide range of instrumentation, particularly LC/MS/MS & applications in the pharmaceutical
industry. Latterly, he was involved in biomarker discovery and target identification using both gel and label-free proteomics.
After 18 years with GlaxoSmithKline, he joined the company in November 2006.
David has over co-authored over 20 publications on the utilisation of mass spectrometry in pharma R&D and recently presented
at the 17th International Mass Spectrometry Conference in Prague.
Ben Reed, PhD
Business Development Director - Biomarker Services
Dr Reed joined the company in 2007, bringing over 6 years' experience of Sales and Business Development of Proteomics equipment
and Contract Services to academic, biotechnology and pharmaceutical customers. Dr Reed joined OGeS from Ciphergen Biosystems Ltd.
where he was European Sales Manager. He has a wealth of experience and knowledge of the proteomics market.
Dr Reed is a biochemistry graduate and gained his PhD at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia and held a postdoctoral fellowship
at the University of Cambridge before joining Ciphergen in 2001.
